Bohdan Khmelnytsky (1595-1657)
Bohdan Zynoviy Mykhailovych Khmelnytsky (1595-1657)

Bohdan Khmelnytsky was a Hetman of the Zaporozhian Kozak (Cossack) Hetmanate. He led the uprising against the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth magnates (1648–1654) which created the Kozak state. He is usually pictured holding a bulava.

Khmelnytsky is pictured on a Ukrainian five Hryven bank note.

you forgot to mention he was an anti-semite who slaughtered many tens of thousands of jews. i'm always amazed at how many ukrainians don't know that. for more info:

I also didn't mention that he signed the treaty in 1654 with Russia that led to Ukraine being absorbed by Russia (and later the Soviet Union). On the upside, in 1954 on the 300th anniversary, Crimea was symbolically transferred from Russia to Ukraine which later allowed independent Ukraine to claim Crimea as part of Ukraine. The Russians still regret that little gesture.

Thanks for the link Ben. It's important that everyone know the truth about history rather than what happens to be politically correct at the time.

true, you didn't mention those other things either, but those are things everyone here in ukraine knows. the anti-semetism is one most people are shocked to hear. btw, i'm not sure having beaches and relatively good wine is worth the 70 years of oppression and genocide of the ussr, nice though they may be. :)

I was hoping to educate people outside of Ukraine as well. You aren't helping to clarify things by referring to the areas where land meets the Black Sea as "beaches". ;)
